Equipment
Since the beginning of April I’ve been living nomadically full-time. Everything I’ve got I carry on my person from place to place when I’m on the move. I’ve gotten pretty fast at packing (twenty minutes when moving leisurely). My relationship with stuff has shown up several times in this blog, travelling (travelling, travelling) and in my Chicago apartment. There might be others; I’ll link them as I find them. The summary is that I find having stuff stressful and love to get rid of things. When I was in high school and using Reddit still, I loved r/minimalism and its associated websites. People would post manifests of all their posessions, or better yet, photos of everything they had. It seemed ideal to me to have such a life in a capsule; I think of all my stuff as the accessories that come with the Preston action figure. So here’s the current list; I’ll try to keep this updated over time, and add in stories and details about each of the items as I feel like it.
Bags
- Backpack (GoRuck2 40L): bought in Chicago in March 2024 to replace a Cotopaxi Alpa 42, the bag I took with me in Europe.
- Drawstring bag (Dakine): bought in Locarno in June 2022 to replace some piece of junk I bought with my mom in April of the same year while in Charlotte for my uncle Don’s funeral.
- Tote bag for laundry (Branded Yoga Flow SF): swag from day one of the yoga teacher training in San Francisco.
- Camera bag (Peak Design 3L): bought from Dodd camera in Chicago in March 2025.
Clothing
- Two chino shorts (Marine Layer, ?): the marine layer pair I got with the ex-girlfriend I dated in Chicago; it’s a surprisingly detailed story that in retrospect displays many of the symptoms of why the relationship collapsed. The other pair I got in Ocracoke in June 2025 because I didn’t have enough short.
- Two sport shorts (Vuori, Lululemon): my mom bought be the Lululemon pair when I was in high school. The Vuori pair I bought in December 2025 after getting sick of handwashing the one pair of shorts every day after a sweaty āsana class.
- Six underwear (Uniqlo, Gap): I bought the uniqlo pairs in Bangkok in April 2025 with my cousin Kathleen because I ran out of underwear while travelling.
- Eight socks (New Balance, Smartwool, Happy Socks):
- Khaki chinos (Mysterious brand from used clothing store): I bought these in Shimokitazawa in Tokyo in May 2025. The brand is “St. Louis Garment Mfg. Company”, and I’ve not been able to track them down. I would buy more.
- Gray sweatpants (Vuori): my mom bought me these in maybe 2021? I remember going to the REI with her and trying them on.
- Button-down shirt (Ralph Lauren): my mom bought me this in high school or university, I’m not sure when: she loved to find used clothes on line, and this was one of them.
- Denim jacket (Afield): used clothing sidewalk fair in Portland, Maine in October 2024 with my then girlfriend.
- Windbreaker (The Sporting Gent): gift from Aunt Selina, who has long patroned this Charlotte boutique to buy my gifts.
- Fleece pullover (Patagonia): my mom bought me this the summer before my first year of high school. It’s got a hole in the left fore sleeve from where I ashed a cigarette in college and a cinder fell on the arm and melted through the plastic.
- Three plain t-shirts: Cage the Elephant, Chicago, August 2025; Denver Folk Lore Center, June 2025 with Dave and Diane in Colorado; Ocracoke Dawn Patrol, June 2024, Ride the Wind in Ocracoke, NC.
- Waffle-knit t-shirt (Prado?): Medellín, September 2025.
- Sneakers (Converse): Charlotte North Carolina, July 2025. Bought with my Aunt Selina, who suggested the colorway I ended up getting.
- Flip flops (Rainbow): San Clemente, California, from the Rainbow Sandals factory boutique, which is kind of a cool place.
- Belt (Magnanni): January 2020, Nordstrom in Old Orchard Mall outside Chicago; my mom bought me this to wear to her sister Lena’s funeral, along with the suit and dress shoes I still have in a storage locker in Chicago.
